Job Description

The EMS Specialist is responsible for managing and coordinating all operational functions of the Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Medical Services. The role includes designing, evaluating, and managing emergency preparedness and response in line with global industry standards in Tailings Management, and meeting Anglo-American Social Way requirements. This position focuses on integrated emergency preparedness and response efforts for both surface and underground operations.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Oversee operations and functionality of Emergency, Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Medical Services for Venetia Mine.
  • Manage firefighting, rescue, and medical service requirements for Venetia Mine Airport to maintain Airport category status.
  • Administer Emergency Systems Repair and Maintenance schedules and associated contracts.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations for first-aid and firefighting equipment inspections and maintenance.
  • Conduct risk assessments and audits for emergency and response systems, implementing necessary controls.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive emergency drill schedule in alignment with GISTM and ISO 14001/45001.
  • Implement an emergency risk awareness program for employees and contractors.
  • Audit emergency response systems and provide expert advice to address potential shortfalls.
  • Collaborate with external Emergency, Fire, Rescue, and Medical institutions to maintain professional services.
  • Update and revise training modules in coordination with the Skills Development Centre.
  • Ensure emergency personnel are trained, assessed, and declared competent by qualified assessors and moderators.
  • Audit building plans for compliance with SANS and fire regulations.
  • Establish and maintain emergency response protocols and plans for surface and underground operations.
  • Maintain service agreements and training for Proto Team members with Mines Rescue Services South Africa.

Qualifications

  • Matric / Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Relevant qualifications in Emergency Preparedness, Response, and Emergency Medical Care specific to mining.
  • Driver’s license code EC & PDP.
  • Intermediate Life Support Paramedic (advantageous).

Role-Specific Knowledge and Experience:

  • 5 years of management experience in emergency preparedness and response.
  • Experience in underground Proto Team operations (advantageous).
  • Expertise in surface and underground emergency response.
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable mining regulations.
  • Incident management training and experience in successfully handling incidents.
  • Strong leadership, team-building, and relationship-management skills.
  • Extensive experience in emergency documentation and preparedness.
